FIELD ENGINEERING

Field Engineering is a key activity performed by engineers to ensure construction groups are supported outside of their main activity.

Each project will have its own unique set of challenges, however for electrical, automation, control and telecommunications, some of the services we provide are outlined below.

Main Electrical Contractor (MEC) and Main Instrument Contractor (MIC) Support

The MEC/MIC will be doing the bulk of the work. They work more efficiently with the guidance of Field Engineers. We assist in the following manner:
  • Schedule interpretation and organization of work packages
  • Attending production meetings
  • Work Pack completion and progress reporting
  • Assistance with interpretation of technical drawings and specification compliance
  • Recommending course of action in case of difficulties or non-compliance.

Vendor Support and Management

We ensure that when vendors arrive at site, they are able to perform their work. We ensure / facilitate:
  • Security clearance for persons and vehicles
  • Attendance of HSSE Safety Induction, and review of safety gear
  • Introduction to Permit To Work (PTW) requirements and permitting
  • Ushering vendors to place of work
  • Supporting vendors throughout their visit
  • Sign off of vendor activity and manhour / timesheets reports
  • Assist with and special testing
  • Sign off of completed satisfactory work.

Equipment Installation Management

Prior to equipment being installed, it must be ensured that the foundations are in agreement with the equipment mounting methods. This can be particularly critical for switchboards, that have tight tolerances for level, skew and waviness.
We offer the following service:
  • Checking of equipment foundations meets the equipment manufacturer's specification and assisting in any remedial work
  • Ensuring all cable transit positions are in agreement with the equipment and that the size is adequate for the cables.
  • Grounding and bonding methods are in place, prior to equipment installation.

Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) and
Design Change Requests (DCRs)

Raising and ECP will often have cost, schedule or perfomance impacts, while a DCR might simply be a simple change to a drawing, to perform the work in a different way.

We offer the following service:
  • Development and maintenance of the "ECP/DCR Register" to track open/closed ECPs/DCRs.
  • In the case of an ECP, we would quantify performance, cost and schedule impact.
  • "Red Line Markups" of approved drawings showing proposed change and justification.
  • Expediting approval with the Engineering and Design Group
  • Distribution of revised drawings to the Construction Group for implementation.

'Red Line Markups" / "As Builts

We ensure that all approved changes to the engineering drawings are kept up to date. We ensure:
  • The correct set of drawings are being marked up
  • Drawings references are updated
  • Document register is updated to include red line revision number
  • Documents are delivered to design group for formal CAD updates.

Cableway and Transit Management

We perform verifications on cable ways, ductbanks and cable transits to ensure that:
  • Cableways type and size is in accordance with the plans, and the installation meets workmanship standards
  • All cableways are tagged for purpose and that the cable ways and transit are coordinated
  • Report and assist in the resolution of any cableways that appear to become over subscribed.

Cable Management

Installation of cable has become one of the main activities in complex structures. In order to meet a successful installation, it is essential to monitor and report on cable installation work, to ensure that the installation is progressing according to plan. We offer the following support:
  • Ensuring the proper cables are being installed on the correct cableways
  • Keeping logs on cable used against cable ordered, and reporting on any potential future shortages
  • Ensuring that the installation of high voltage, low voltage and instrument cables are adequately spaced / on own tray to meet the Regulations / Specification
Good Field Engineering will help keep the project under control. We help main contractors, vendors to ensure efficiency. And of course, want to be sure what was built.
